As part of Reconciliation Week, Radius Art Space, in conjunction with Hepburn Shire Council, is screening the award winning documentary, “Returning Our Ancestors, Exploring the Journey of Repatriating Aboriginal Ancestors to Country

Produced by the Victorian Aboriginal Heritage Council, Returning Our Ancestors delves into the historical injustices of desecration of Aboriginal burial sites and removal of ancestral remains where they had been placed with care and ceremony, to then be housed in metal boxes as specimens or ornaments of curiosity by individuals, families and scientific institutions. The 1980s saw Aboriginal Ancestors start to return to rest on Country. The film documents the ongoing journey of returning these ancestors to their rightful resting places, highlighting the resilience and dedication of Aboriginal communities in preserving their cultural heritage. The journey is by no means complete and there are many more Aboriginal Ancestors still to come home.

Following the screening, engage in a panel discussion featuring cultural experts who will provide insights into the repatriation process and its significance. This is an opportunity to deepen your understanding and participate in meaningful dialogue about cultural restoration and reconciliation. Be a part of this significant event that sheds light on a crucial aspect of Australia’s history and the ongoing journey towards reconciliation. We can all walk together and help in this essential work.
