The beloved Daylesford community cinema is poised to make a comeback, thanks to the persistent efforts of the Daylesford Cinema Group. The community’s cinema had been a cultural hub before its closure, offering films and events that brought together both locals and tourists. After years of uncertainty following the sale of The Rex building and a number of unsuccessful proposals to house the cinema in other local venues, a plan has emerged to reestablish the cinema as a community-run venture in the original home of cinema in Daylesford, The Rex.

Fittingly, the Cinema Group has named thee new theatre Phoenix@The Rex.

A deal has been struck with the new owners of The Rex, the Comelli and Bromley families, which will allow the group to lease the upper floor of the building. The space, which was designated as a cinema in the ill-fated Council renovation of The Rex was partially completed before the project was abandoned. Council spent approximately $3 million on the renovations but they are unable to partition how much of that sum was involved in building the cinema shell. Nevertheless, the community may eventually see a positive outcome from the vast sums spent on the abandoned project.

Under the arrangement with the new owners, the Cinema Group will fit out the existing shell as a modern, 70-seat cinema with a café and bar.  The renovation will stay true to the Art Deco style of the original structure. The group also plans to add an eye-catching street entrance, complete with attractive lighting and signage that will invite both locals and tourists to experience the venue.

Chris Jones from Show Biz Ballarat, a key supporter of the project, expressed confidence in the viability of the cinema. With his support and the collaboration of the building’s owners, the Phoenix@The Rex project is moving forward.

However, to bring this vision to life, the group will need significant support from the community. They are calling for donations, in-kind contributions, and volunteer efforts to assist in fitting out the cinema space and supporting its ongoing operation. The group has also applied for a Victorian Tourism Infrastructure Grant and will continue to seek additional funding.

Once completed, Phoenix@The Rex will offer more than just films. The venue will host a range of events, including film festivals, musical performances, stand-up comedy, and small theatrical productions, providing a vibrant cultural space for the Daylesford community.

A fundraising campaign is set to launch soon, with the group urging the community to get involved. With the help of volunteers and supporters, the Daylesford Cinema Group aims to re-establish its place in the Daylesford cultural landscape.
