A fiery sunrise ignited the horizon earlier this week, casting deep oranges, reds, and purples across the morning sky. The forested hillside of Wombat Hill stands in stark contrast, its dark silhouette sharply defined against the brilliant dawn.
Smoke in the atmosphere from fires in the Little Desert and Grampians/Gariwerd National Parks and from as far away as Tasmania are affecting our sunrises and sunsets. Smoke particles scatter shorter wavelengths of light, like blue and green, allowing the longer wavelengths—red, orange, and pink—to dominate. This enhances the intensity and depth of the sunrise colours, creating a dramatic and ethereal effect that seems to set the sky ablaze.
