From Supergirl to Ostraya

Supergirl, Cars-20th Anniversary and Chocolat feature today at the Phoenix Cinema. Tomorrow an Australian director comes to talk, to be followed by dazzling array of Steven Spielberg films.

`Chocolat’,  with a chocolate tasting from Christina Tantsis, founder of Sisko Chocolate of Trentham, is on tonight at 7. Guests will be taken through each chocolate tasting, sharing techniques, profiles and the stories behind artisan chocolates, with handcrafted chocolates for all.

The film features Juliette Binochet arriving in a repressed French village with her six-year-old daughter. Juliette opens a chocolaterie, forever changing her new home.

Tony Rogers, director of the satire How to Speak Australians will speak on his film and have a Q&A before it screens at 7pm on 5 September. The greatly unappreciated Welcome to Woop Woop trod this territory, but this time it’s Indian linguistics students thrust into the realm of you bloody ripper, Awstraya. One student falls for a local, thanking her for introducing him to “meat pies, AFL, casual racism …a rich cultural stew”.

Superman’s cousin is on screen for the next three days. An unexpected, ruthless adversary strikes, bringing pain and pathos to  Kara Zor-El, a broken girl with a good heart trying to keep up a solitary existence free of expectations or responsibility. (4 September, 4pm, 5 September, 11am, 6 September 4.30pm).

A hot-shot racing-car named Lightning McQueen is waylaid in Radiator Springs in Cars- 20th Anniversary. He is seeking success only to find that life is about the journey, not the finishing line. (4 September, 4.30pm, 6 September, 11am)

Spielberg Month gets into top gear, with 11 of his greatest films to be shown.

Darker than Jurassic Park, The Lost World-Jurassic Park (7 September, 3pm) centres on an attempt to exploit dinosaurs in a new theme park, leading to a clash between an eccentric chaos theorist and mathematician.

The film is famous for its use of real-life monitor lizards and iguanas with glued-on horns to play dinosaurs.

Spielberg’s range is again shown in Sugarland Express from 1974. Goldie Hawn stars as a former crook who must talk her husband into a prison break to help pluck their two-year-old son out of foster care.  (10 September, 4.30pm).
