Here comes Wile E. Coyote, movies at the Phoenix Cinema

Back in 1998 Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman made the original Practical Magic, now seen as a beloved cult classic.

They really enjoyed working together as the Owens sisters.

Now, after decades apart, they unite for Practical Magic 2, which takes place decades after the first film. The women are part of a long line of witches meaning any man who falls in love with an Owens woman is destined for an untimely death.

It’s on at Daylesford’s Phoenix Cinema at 4.30, 18 September, 7pm 20-21 September.

Coyote v. Acme (2pm,18 September, 7pm, 19 September, 2pm, 20 September) is quirky and strangely diverting. Critics say it is a strangely diverting live-action-cartoon hybrid, the like of which has not been popular for quite some time.

It’s a fresh twist on the surreal forever war between Wile E. Coyote and the speedy Road Runner.

Continuing the Steven Spielberg series, Hook won praise for the performances of Dustin Hoffman and Bob Hoskins as Captain Hook and Smee. They really make the film, along with Peter Pan, who must return to Neverland to find his kidnapped children (7pm,18 September).

At 11am on 20 September, Artificial Intelligence concerns a robot in search of love.  A young Android named David is the first of his kind to express human emotion in this modern retelling of Pinocchio.

Close Encounters of the Third Kind (2pm, 21 September) is an uplifting and optimistic story, with many scary moments before the aliens’ exact nature is revealed. A “must watch,” said The Guardian.
