Following a hugely successful launch during the Words in Winter festival, Paradise Bookshop has secured federal funding to keep local book lovers gathering—quietly—throughout spring.
Paradise Bookshop is one of 26 independent bookstores across Australia selected for the Australian Booksellers Association (ABA) Bookseller Events Grant, supported by the Australian Government through Writing Australia. The grant ensures The Society of Silent Readers can continue offering its regular sanctuary for local readers on the last Thursday of every month.
The next session takes place on Thursday, September 24, from 6:00 PM to 7:30 PM at Paradise Bookshop.
The updated format builds on the August debut, expanding the session to a full hour and a half: an hour of uninterrupted quiet reading, followed by a half hour to enjoy hot chai or tea, browse the shelves and chat. Attendees also receive 10% off any book purchases made during the evening.
Thanks to the grant funding, the store is adding extra comfort to the space with new cushions and cosy knee rugs. Guests are still welcome to BYO a favourite cushion or portable chair, if they prefer their own creature comforts. A dedicated phone basket will be available for anyone seeking a complete digital detox during the hour.
The sessions remain a gentle, judgment-free space for everyone. All ages welcome. If you don’t have a book, Devon and Joe can help you pick one out—and if you prefer to bring your knitting or a sketchbook instead, you are equally welcome to join.
