In an era of relentless notifications and crowded schedules, carving out an hour of uninterrupted reading can feel nearly impossible. Paradise Bookshop is offering a welcome antidote this winter with the launch of The Society of Silent Readers (TSSR), an initiative running as part of the Words in Winter 2026 festival programme.
Designed as an immersive literary experience, TSSR invites community members to gather and “read alone, together”. The concept strips away the pressure of traditional book clubs—there are no assigned titles, no required discussions and no expectations to socialise. Attendees simply bring their current read, or pick up something new from the shop’s shelves, find a comfortable spot, and sink into an hour of collective stillness and quiet reading.
“Making time to read isn’t about being productive; it’s about making space for ourselves,” says Devon Taylor, owner of Paradise Bookshop. “The Society of Silent Readers is designed as a gentle, intentional refuge for our community and a chance to connect (or re-connect) with the practice of reading.”
To build anticipation leading up to the main event, TSSR pop-up bookstacks have been placed in favourite local cafes across the area. Passers-by are encouraged to take a book to enjoy with their coffee, swap a title, or bring a find along to the inaugural gathering.
To keep everyone warm and cosy on a chilly winter evening, Paradise Bookshop will have the heaters glowing and hot chai ready for attendees as they arrive. For those looking to truly step away from distractions and minimise screen time, a dedicated basket will be waiting, where you can safely leave your phone for a complete digital detox during the hour.
The first official meeting of The Society of Silent Readers will take place on Thursday, 27 August, from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Paradise Bookshop. Participants are encouraged to bring their own book along with a cushion or blanket to settle in. All ages welcome. The event is free, though bookings are appreciated to help manage numbers.
