The popular and picturesque Domino Trail between Lyonville and Trentham has reopened after the last of the damage from June 2021 storm has been cleared.
The 6 km trail follows the old Dayesford-Woodend rail line between forest and farm land and through low-lying swamp. The route is wide and the track is either compacted earth or gravel topping. As a rail trail, it has no steep hills and is suitable for walkers and cyclists of all ages.
The route starts at historic Trentham railway station and follows a generally westward path to Lyonville terminating near the historic Radio Springs Hotel, an ideal place to stop for lunch or refreshments before making the return trip.
Brochures and maps are available from tourist information centres in Daylesford or Trentham.
A larger project, the Daylesford-Macedon rail trail has been a priority project of the Shire for many years but little recent progress has been made because of pandemic restrictions and other financial priorities.
The Domino Trail walk takes about one and a half hours one way; three hours return, four and a half hours with a leisurely lunch.
