The Daylesford & District Horticultural Society, fondly known as the “Hortis,” has launched into a new year following a successful and eventful 2024. With a mix of informative talks, hands-on activities, and social gatherings, members embraced a diverse range of horticultural experiences.

The new year kicked off with the traditional January picnic, held at Corinne Mesnage’s Lyonville property. With perfect weather, members enjoyed a tour of Corinne’s remarkable garden, showcasing her greenhouse, treehouse, and handcrafted stonework. A dinner setting under the tree canopy provided an ideal setting for a picnic dinner. Silver Jam provided lively music, adding to the relaxed atmosphere.

At the recent Annual General Meeting held at the Community Bank building in Hepburn, Margret Lockwood was elected President, filling a role that remained vacant in 2024. John Binnion continues as Secretary, and the committee includes Treasurer Lauren Eagle and members Lynne Cullen, Jane Nash, and John Franklin. The Vice President position remains open.

Guest speaker at the AGM was Gayle Osborne, CEO of Wombat Forest Care, who talked about the unique fauna of Wombat Forest and the need to press ahead with the planned, but not yet finalised, Wombat-Lerderderg National Park.

Past vice-president, Anne Milton, spoke of the achievements of the Hortis over the past year. The Winter Feast in July was a highlight, bringing members together for a warm celebration. The society played an active role in the Winter in the Gardens Festival, hosted an edible flower stall at the Daylesford Show, and concluded the year with a festive December dinner. Throughout the year, members also participated in plant propagation, exchanged gardening tips, and enjoyed the camaraderie of shared horticultural passion.

The society welcomes new members. Annual membership is a very affordable $15. For more details, attend a meeting or join the Hortis community in 2025! Meetings are held at the Community Bank building, 113 Main Rd Hepburn, at 7:30 pm on the first Tuesday of each month. Contact the Secretary, John Binion at Horti@outlook.com.au.
