Daylesford Art Show entries close 4 October. So get painting! The Daylesford Art Show runs from 29 October to 3 November and this year is being held at the Daylesford Town Hall.
This week we spotlight Andrew Littlejohn, a painter working in watercolour and oil who prefers to work from life using a limited palette.
Andrew is mentored by David Moore, a Castlemaine-based tonal painter known for his landscapes and still life works. Moore taught tonal painting for over 30 years at Montsalvat in Eltham and now instructs students privately around Castlemaine. Tonal painting focuses on capturing the relationships between light and dark across a scene, rather than working primarily from colour, and often relies on a restrained palette to keep the eye on those value relationships. It’s a method with deep roots in Australian painting, tracing back to the tonalist tradition championed by artists such as Max Meldrum in the early twentieth century.
Andrew is a member of the Victorian Artist Society and regularly attends their workshops.
Andrew has travelled to Ibla, Sicily, with a group of eight other Australians to paint landscapes en plein air under David Moore’s direction. Working in oil on small boards, he observed the landscape from life, completing each piece outdoors in about two hours and concentrating on capturing the light using tonal techniques. The trip resulted in a group exhibition at Art Puff in Castlemaine in May 2026.
Andrew would love to spend more time painting en plein air in the Goldfields.
