Work experience report – Notes from DNC

Bea undertook work experience with us last week, and has written this recount for the Wombat Post.  She is a student at Daylesford Secondary College.  Bea declined a photo to accompany the article so we have attached one of the posters she created in Canva to promote an upcoming event in The Paddock.

My work experience at Daylesford Neighbourhood Centre

During my work experience at the Daylesford Neighborhood Centre, I had the opportunity to learn new skills, meet wonderful people, and see how much the Centre does for our local community.  Every day was different, giving me the chance to experience a variety of activities and better understanding of how the Centre supports people of all ages.

One of my favorite activities was helping in the kitchen.  I assisted with prepping and serving meals, which showed me how much food can bring people together and create a welcoming environment.  I enjoyed working alongside the staff and volunteers and learning the importance of teamwork.  I also spent time gardening, helping care for the gardens around the Centre.  It was incredibly rewarding to contribute to keeping the space looking beautiful while learning more about growing plants and the effort that goes into maintaining a community garden.

Another part of my work experience involved helping spread the word about the Centre and its program, with the usage of posters.  I learned how important it is to promote community events so that people know about support, activities, and opportunities available to them.  Seeing how many different programs the Centre offers gave me a greater appreciation for the positive impact it has on the local community.

I also took part in a Junk Journal workshop, where I discovered how simple everyday items can be transformed into creative and meaningful art.  It was a wonderful experience that encouraged creativity and showed how workshops at the Centre help people connect with others while learning new skills.  I enjoyed seeing everyone’s unique ideas and how something as simple as recycled materials could become a personal keepsake.

Overall, my time at the Neighbourhood Centre was both enjoyable and educational.  The experience also helped build my confidence, improve my communication skills, and develop a stronger understanding of the value of volunteering and community involvement.  Everyone was welcoming, supportive, and I gained a greater appreciation for the important role the Centre plays for the community and would like to thank all the staff, volunteers, and participants who made my time there such a positive experience.  It is an experience I’ll remember and one that has inspired me to continue getting involved in my community whenever I can.
