David Robertson will once again join The Long Ride in 2025 – his sixth time taking part in the charity event.
David first discovered a passion for riding at age 16, but his motivation for joining The Long Ride runs deeper than his love of the open road. The event raises funds and awareness for prostate cancer, a cause close to his heart.
“In 2006, soon after my 50th birthday, I had a check-up with my GP, which included a PSA test. I was diagnosed with prostate cancer,” David explained. “It was a shock. I was relatively young. But because it was caught early, treatment has been relatively successful.”
Following his diagnosis, David encouraged his siblings to be tested. Two of his elder brothers were subsequently found to have cancer – one received treatment while the other remains under active surveillance – and his younger brother now undergoes regular testing. “I encourage all males to be tested, particularly if there is any history of cancer in the family,” David said.
For David, The Long Ride is about more than raising funds. “The mutual support between riders is of great importance as we share not only a love of riding but the mutual goal of raising awareness and donations,” he said.
Riders depart from every state and territory, travelling through regional Australia before converging in Esperance, WA, for the final ride together. David will begin his journey from Daylesford and is looking forward to meeting up with his brother and other riders along the way.
