Suez Recycling and Recovery assumed responsibility for the Shire’s kerbside collection service on Thursday 1 July 2021.

Council is launching a new truck art competition to celebrate the arrival of a new kerbside collection service. The competition is open for students in the region from Kindergarten to Year 12.

Mayor, Cr Lesley Hewitt, said that students from across Hepburn Shire are encouraged to get creative and submit designs for the 2021 truck art competition.

The theme for the competition is ‘reducing landfill’, with the winning design in each category to be displayed on a local waste collection truck. The school-aged artist will receive a $150 Gift Card and their school will receive a $200 voucher to progress a sustainable project at their school. Runners up in each category will receive a $50 voucher.

“It’s exciting to be running this competition and we’re looking forward to seeing the artistic flair of our youngest residents in relation to this important topic – reducing landfill,” said Cr Hewitt.

“We’re asking students to demonstrate ideas for where items should go, other than in the red lidded bin, which means going to landfill. This will help spread the message of where items can go, or how items could be reused or recycled rather than ending up in landfill,” said Cr Hewitt.

There will be four new kerbside collection trucks making over 10,000 bin lifts per week throughout the Shire. These trucks have on-board technology which will allow the drivers, Council customer service and the Environment and Waste team to better manage missed bins and collection issues. Technology will also allow drivers to identify contamination or recycling waste in real time.

The competition is currently open until Friday 13 August 2021. Entries must be submitted on a flat A3 paper in a landscape format or as a digital pdf file.

Each entry will be judged by Hepburn Shire Council. The winners in the Junior and Secondary categories will be selected based on their artwork and how well they depicted the competition theme.

All entrants should complete the competition entry form and submit their design and form to Hepburn Shire Council by emailing Waste Education Officer, Sophie spritchard@hepburn.com.au or post to:
Environment and Waste Team Hepburn Shire Council
PO Box 21 Daylesford 3460

Students from schools across Hepburn Shire are eligible to enter. Only one entry will be accepted from each individual (or a class group).
