The next concert in the Christ Church Concert series will be the violas de gamba group, Consortium for a performance titled ‘The Gamut of Viols’ on Saturday 24 September at 2.30pm.
Consortium is a group of viola da gamba players who met at different times through the Early Music Studio at the University of Melbourne, opened by viola da gamba maestro Jordi Savall.
The viola da gamba looks like cross between a guitar and a cello and is often just called the ‘viol’, when different sizes of viols are grouped together it’s called a
consort and thus the name – Consortium.
The Consortium concert in Daylesford will present a composition hot off the press, Empress Gi, The Dream and Moonlit Night, by Brooke Green. “We always enjoy playing new music for viol consort, especially when it’s written by a fellow Australian viol player,” they said. Sydney based composer Brooke Green is the recipient of the 2019 Jonathan Blakeman National Composition Prize and a winner of the Viola da Gamba Society of America’s Traynor Competition for New Viol Music. “Her beautiful music is luscious and melodic, soulful and jaunty, inspiring and entertaining.”

The program also includes a smorgasbord of music for viol consort from the 16th and 17th centuries in England and Europe. The earliest piece is a Battaglia by Henrich Isaac who lived c.1450-1570 describing going into battle.
Later Fantasias by Henry Purcell, 1659-1695, have distinct sections heralding the future of movements in compositions.
Between these works are popular Renaissance instrumental forms such as the canzona, passacaglia, pavan and fantasia by composers Isaac, Frescobaldi, Mico, Marini and Morley, and divisions for solo bass viol by Diego Ortiz.
