Sweet Mona’s Choir is a 35 member Ballarat-based world music and gospel choir which started at Ballarat University as a performing arts student choir 30 years ago. Many of the singers are current or former Daylesford and Hepburn residents.
The choir is highly regarded for its vibrancy, harmonies, tight rhythms and extensive repertoire of Gospel and World Music. The origin of this is in their initial musical director, renowned local musician, Barry Deenicks (Melbourne Ska Orchestra) and his arrangements in the tradition of the legendary gospel quartets (Swan Silvertones , Pilgrim Travellers). Their sound ranges from a rich, deep resonance to a lively, energetic tone, to haunting melodies that stay with you long after the performance is over.
They are famous for their world-class arrangements, created by Barry Deenick, Stella Savy, and Valanga Khoza. They have worked with some of Australia’s most renowned musicians, including Tim Neal, Venetta Fields, Valanga Khoza, Tony Backhouse and Vika & Linda Bull.
Current Musical Director, Stella Savy, has been a member of the choir since its inception. Stella, a renowned percussionist, vocalist and musical director, has shaped the choir’s World Music repertoire. She is full of joy, humour and funk influenced by her Seychelles heritage .
