Work to reopen the Rex appears likely following an application to council for preliminary works to the front façade.
A planning permit (PLN24/0080) was received by Council in early April to make alterations to the existing building façade including new entry doors and windows. The estimated cost of these preliminary works is $30000.
The Rex development which currently includes three shops (Gewürzhaus Spice House and two for Stockdale and Leggo estate agents) consists of 3 levels:
- the Ground Floor, the bulk of the building which includes the 3 existing shops, and the constructed mezzanine level at the rear. A revised preliminary layout was submitted for this level.
- the second Level which remains unaltered in the submission, includes an open area fronting Vincent St and the space previously framed for the proposed cinema, and
- the third level which consists of the old projection room also remains unchanged in the application.
The proposed works include a double entry door between the existing shops with curved glazed finish to complete the entrance.
The application provides a layout of the ground floor with 8 additional shops being constructed plus a large gallery at the rear. The Gallery will also occupy the mezzanine level.
The application also seeks an waiver from on-site parking requirements. Based on the available floor space, 50 on site parking places would be required but there are only 30 spaces on the roof of the Rex building.
