Scattered along winding country roads and meandering creek beds, the ancient gums of rural Victoria stand as majestic sentinels—weathered, gnarled, breathtakingly beautiful and never the same. Their twisted limbs reach skyward, shaped by decades of wind, drought, rain and sun, each one telling a story that stretches back through forgotten generations. In summer, they offer welcome respite from the heat; in winter, shelter from wind and rain. They provide homes for birds, shade for livestock, and quiet moments of reflection for those who pass by—living monuments to both nature’s resilience and the layered history of the land.

This particular tree near Clunes captured the imagination of Victor Szwed, a keen observer who likes to remind us to pay attention to the ordinary things that we might otherwise pass by. Victor is always on the lookout for special places in our Shire to share with readers, helping us see familiar landscapes with fresh appreciation.
