Glamour comes to Daylesford’s community-run cinema the Phoenix, with the showing of `The Devil Wears Prada 2’.
The 2006 film is said to have defined a generation. Tonight from 6pm there is the promise of fashion, some glamour and, of course free bubbles.
It screens Saturday night, Sunday at 4.30pm and Monday night..
Sunday’s 11am film is the classic “The Wizard of Oz’. One of cinema’s great fairy tales, it’s chockful with wonderful scenes and unforgettable moments, such as when the scarecrow is dismembered and the Tin Man says, “Well, that’s you all over.” A superb score (“Somewhere Over the Rainbow”), incredible sets and perfect performances make it a must-see.
There could scarcely be a greater contrast than with the film Time’ magazine’s judged best of the year.
Combining the themes of the nature of fame, the responsibility of critics, the arrogance of genius and the nature of gatekeeping, `The Christophers’ has what a reviewer calls a “blistering, brutal performance” by Ian McKellen. This incredibly funny comedy-drama is on the edge of a thriller and makes working out a possible ending a tough task.
It’s on at 4.30 on both Thursday, 4 June and the next day, and 7pm on Saturday, 6 June.
Tomorrow at 4.30 is baa-time with `The Sheep Detectives’. Who could guess sheep could solve a murder? This’ is hailed an endearing experience which is bound to become a family favourite. It’s also on at Sunday at 10am and Monday at 2pm.
Back to back favourites are showing this weekend, with `Mary Poppins’ tomorrow at 1.50 and “Singin’ in the Rain’ at 2pm on Sunday and 2pm Monday. In the first, set in turn of the century London ,a magical nanny employs music and adventure to bring two neglected children closer to their father, while in the second a silent films star cleverly subverts the arrival of talkies with what these days might be called AI.
