Gordon Nightingale

It was a perfect autumn morning,
Though the breeze was crisp and cold,
The sky was crystal clear and blue.
The walkers were both young and old.

Couples with their small children,
Rugged up as if for an Antarctic mission.
But the jetties jutting out around the lake
Were devoid of fishermen fishing.

Obeying government restriction rules,
Walking around the lake in pairs.
Face masks again are mandatory,
But those without them didn’t raise a care.

The trail was dampened from the recent rain
In the shadows of the shady glades.
In other places, the sun so bright,
One needed a pair of shades.

Walking briskly, paused to chat
With familiar people one chanced to meet
In socially separated conversation
With everyone you greet.

A pleasant circuit of the trail completed,
You so enjoyed a walk around the lake;
Return to the vehicle to head for home,
For a cup of coffee and a slice of cake.
