Dear Editor,
In the wake of a vicious attack on our First Nations People at Camp Sovereignty on 31 August, Victorians turned out in their thousands last Saturday to support them. I was fortunate to be among those who gathered outside Flinders Street Station that day.
One of the Elders who addressed the crowd from the steps told us that they believed their ancestors were buried close by, on the site of the Myer Music Bowl. Most of the leaders who addressed the crowd welcomed us to Country, spoke about forgetting the wrongs of a terrible colonial past and the importance of moving forward to a more inclusive society.
We then marched peacefully up Swanston Street to Parliament Building. This profound moment was unfortunately lost on the media, who, it seems, only wanted to report on the clashes that occurred there that day between opposing groups.
