After being open for less than a week, the new Phoenix Cinema Daylesford has won the hearts of locals and visitors.

It’s hard to overstate the enthusiasm and joy of those who made it up the stairs to behold the cinema’s plush red seats and art deco stylishness.

And that’s before they patiently line up for Choc Tops and popcorn. A generous community member donated Easter eggs, which were given to all the children at the first few Easter sessions.

In the first five days 800 people, including 350 adults, attended the four school holiday films screening, most booking online. Some films, such as the new release `Project Hail Mary’, sold out. Bookings are similar for next week.

Said one moviegoer on Facebook, “We had such a lovely time, and the cinema and staff are fabulous. Delicious cookies, popcorn. We saw `The Magic Faraway Tree’…”
Another wrote, “Our family went last night and saw `Project Hail Mary’. The film was enjoyed by all.

“The cinema is excellent, with very comfy seats, all with a good view of the screen, and the sound system was great. We didn’t purchase any food, but the Choc Tops were very popular.

“Thanks to the volunteers who worked at the screening, and congratulations to the hard-working team who helped The Phoenix rise.

“It will be such a marvellous attraction for the community and visitors.”

Cinema Group President Jules McDonald said, “We are delighted with the enthusiasm shown by locals and visitors alike. Such a response could scarcely have been anticipated and it is welcome and appreciated after the effort over 18 months to bring the cinema to fruition.”
