NAIDOC Week runs from Sunday 3 July to Sunday 10 July, with a number of local opportunities to get involved and show support.
Hepburn Shire Council is inviting the community to get together this NAIDOC Week, to celebrate and recognise the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders.
Council is hosting a free film screening of the Australian family drama Satellite Boy. The event will be held from 6pm on Wednesday 6 July at the Daylesford Neighbourhood Centre. Tickets are limited and bookings can be made by contacting Council’s Reconciliation Officer, Annette Millar at amillar@hepburn.vic.gov.au or 0477 970 828.
Council is also supporting a free film screening event the following day at the Trentham Neighbourhood Centre at 1pm on Thursday 7 July. Bookings can be made via www.trenthamnc.org.
The theme for NAIDOC Week 2022 is Get up, Stand up, Show up.
“Reconciliation is certainly a priority for Council and we are pleased to support activities during NAIDOC Week, which are such a positive celebration of First Nations people,” said Hepburn Shire Mayor, Cr Tim Drylie.
Council has provided clap sticks and a traditional custodian songbook to libraries so they can be used during story times for children. The clap sticks were made by Jason Kerr of DJARRA. NAIDOC Week resources have also been shared with schools throughout the Shire.
Cr Drylie said, “We also have applications open to join our Reconciliation Advisory Committee, which will help Council to develop the next Reconciliation Action Plan.”
“Under the current action plan Council’s initiatives included opening the Manna Gums Frontier Wars Memorial, the recommendation to rename Jim Crow Creek to Larni Barramal Yaluk, cultural awareness training for Council staff and recognition of dates significant to our First Nations people, including NAIDOC Week,”
“I encourage people with a passion for reconciliation to apply for the advisory committee,”
