Enjoy an afternoon of Classical, Latin American and Flamenco guitar with Luke Barson at Yandoit Cultural on Sunday April 16th commencing at 4pm.
Luke Barson developed a love for the guitar at an early age, initially inspired by flamenco music. He has since studied Latin American and classical guitar with a special interest in the music of Brazil. With great sensitivity and playfulness, Luke’s performances bring together these contrasting styles from popular and classical traditions showcasing the stylistic versatility. Luke draws on a diverse range of musical traditions, including classical, Latin America, West African, contemporary, traditional folk, jazz and improvised music. Luke is currently studying at Melbourne’s Conservatorium of Music.
Luke has performed as a soloist at numerous events, notably at Melbourne International Guitar Festival 2018, 2019; NEVR Annual Showcase Concert, Hamer Hall, 2017, 2018; Open Studio; Hurstbridge Jazz Club, 2022; Bar 303; Bar Open; Tamera Peace Research Centre, Portugal, 2016, as well as at private functions, as a volunteer at an aged care facility and as a street musician.
Alongside his musical practice and teaching Luke is privileged to work as assistant to master luthier Sachar Amos hand-building a range of classical guitars and acoustic guitars. He is also committed activist for climate action and the protection of threatened ecosystems and he is guided by the question of how music and art can facilitate the furthering of ecological consciousness.
A member of several ensembles, Luke has performed as a member of klezmer and gypsy-jazz band Disgruntled Architect, performing regularly as a guitarist, vocalist, saxophonist and percussionist at venues including Open Studio; Bar Open; Bar 303’ Sun Down Sounds; Youthfest, Banyule Council; Warrandyte Festival; Port Fairy Jazz Festival; Cool Summer Festival and St Kilda Fest as well as private functions. He has also performed on guitar and vocals in a duo with vocalist Zen Jackson, 2017–20. Luke currently plays in the guitar trio Pluck! with Ryan Griffith and Noah James. Together they explore the vast repertoire of guitar music from diverse traditions around the globe, from bluegrass to flamenco, from gypsy-swing to transcriptions of East African kora music.
