Lizzy Welsh (baroque violin) and Joy Lee (harpsichord) will return to the Christ Church concert series on Saturday 29 June 2024 with an exploration of composer-performer relationships from the 17th century to the present.
Lizzy Welsh is internationally renowned as a music-maker and performer of early music, new music and experimental improvisation, principally on the baroque violin and modern violin. Lizzy’s “characterful virtuosity” has cemented her as one
of Australia’s leading early music performers. An advocate for creating new music for early instruments, Lizzy has a Doctor of Musical Arts in this field, and has developed one of the world’s largest repertoires of new music for the baroque violin and viola d’amore, premiering many of these works at leading international festivals. Her debut solo album The Target Has Disappeared was released on Swiss label Discreet Editions in 2023 to critical acclaim.
Joy Lee has a special focus on contemporary music and collaborates with a number of Australian and international composers in realising new works for piano, harpsichord and clavichord. As a harpsichordist her repertoire spans the breadth of the late Renaissance and Baroque eras to music written this year. Her flexible approach and wide musical interests have led to her performing with the Astra Chamber Music Society, the Arcko Symphonic Ensemble, Homophonic!, the INLAND performance series and others. She is a founding member of Progressive Baroque quartet Croissants & Whiskey, an ensemble giving new energy to old instruments. Joy studied piano and fortepiano at the University of Western Australia and the Australian National University, gaining First Class Honours and Masters degrees in performance.
Lizzy and Joy are both based in regional Victoria and have been playing together for over a decade. They are no strangers to Christ Church Concerts both appearing in the 2023 concert series. Their collaboration began initially performing new compositions in Australia’s leading new music ensembles. As each of them independently trained in early music performance, their partnership evolved to include performing together on harpsichord and baroque violin.
It was a natural progression for their artistic relationships to extend into imagining new sounds for baroque instruments, leading to the creation of dozens of new works for baroque instruments written for Joy and Lizzy, of which we will hear three examples at this concert.
Baroque composers Heinrich Biber, Isabella Leonarda, Girolamo Frescobaldi and Carlo Farina will be featured along with contemporary composers Rohan Drape, Allan Walker and Biddy Connor.
Lizzy and Joy’s concert promises much and provides yet another opportunity to listen to wonderful baroque music with the added bonus of new Australian music written for these early music instruments. The combination will certainly appeal to audiences.
