The Friends of Kangaroo Creek, Wheatsheaf, have received funding from the Victorian Blackberry Taskforce to support their ongoing efforts to manage blackberry infestations along Kangaroo Creek. This funding will allow the group to engage a Project Officer for up to three months to assist local landholders with blackberry control.
Blackberry is a highly invasive species that threatens native vegetation and waterways. The new Project Officer will work closely with landholders to develop voluntary three-year management plans for controlling blackberry on their properties. They will also provide expert advice and assist in mapping infestations to guide targeted treatment efforts.
While the Friends of Kangaroo Creek will oversee the project, the Hepburn Shire Council’s Biodiversity Officer will help field enquiries from applicants. However, this is a community-led initiative, not a council-run project.
The group is currently accepting applications for the Project Officer position, which will commence in February 2025. Interested candidates should apply by February 17.
