Daylesford Christ Church Concert Series – Death and the Maiden
Death and the Maiden is more than just a piece of chamber music; it’s a deeply autobiographical work. In a letter to a friend around the time of its composition, Schubert expressed his profound despair: “Imagine a man whose health will never be right again, and who in sheer despair over this, even makes things worse instead of better…whose most brilliant hopes have perished.”
This sense of hopelessness and struggle is palpable throughout the quartet. Yet, there are also moments of lyrical beauty and fleeting hope, creating a poignant and complex emotional landscape. The quartet was not published until 1831, three years after Schubert’s death at the age of 31, solidifying its legacy as a powerful and personal confrontation with the end of life.
