Daylesford Bowling Club Goes Green — With a Twist

After five years of careful saving, the Daylesford Bowling Club is set to make a significant change to its beloved facility, converting its top green from traditional grass to a synthetic surface — and opening the door to year-round bowls in one of the region’s most scenic settings.

The project will give the club what members are calling “the best of both worlds”: one classic grass green alongside one modern synthetic, ensuring something for everyone whether you’re a seasoned pennant player or a first-timer curious about the sport.

The timing couldn’t be better. Currently, the grass greens close between May and September each year for maintenance and recovery, meaning the club — and the community — effectively goes without for nearly half the year. The new synthetic surface changes that entirely, offering play in every season and making the club’s popular Bowls, Bevvies & Bites offering a year-round attraction for locals and visitors alike.

For the club’s pennant bowlers, the conversion also solves a practical problem. Many competing clubs in the district already play on synthetic surfaces, and familiarity with the surface can make a real difference at that level. Having one at home means players can train and compete on the same conditions they’ll face away from home.

But the club is quick to emphasise that this isn’t just about competitive bowls. Community access sits at the heart of the project. The club regularly opens its greens at no cost to local schools and disability groups, and the synthetic surface makes those sessions even more accessible — a gentle, inclusive activity that places few physical demands on participants. A more durable, all-weather surface means those visits can happen more reliably, regardless of the season.

There are practical benefits too. While synthetic greens still require some upkeep, the club estimates the conversion will deliver around 35 per cent in savings — both in dollars and in volunteer hours — a meaningful gain for a community-run club that relies heavily on the goodwill of its members.

Set against the backdrop of one of Daylesford’s most beautiful corners, the club says it is excited for the future and looks forward to welcoming everyone through its gates — with a green that will now be ready whenever you are.
