Hepburn Shire Council will officially launch its INNOVATE Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) during NAIDOC Week 2025 — a time to honour the history, culture, and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

NAIDOC Week, held annually in July, is a national celebration that invites all Australians to reflect on the strength and resilience of First Nations communities. Originating from decades of advocacy for Aboriginal rights, NAIDOC (National Aboriginal and Islanders Day Observance Committee) Week has evolved into a powerful platform for recognition, education and solidarity. This year’s theme encourages communities to engage in truth-telling, cultural respect, and real progress towards reconciliation.

The RAP launch event will take place on Friday 11 July, from 1 to 3 pm at Hepburn Pavilion, Mineral Springs Road, Hepburn Springs. All community members are warmly invited to attend.

Mayor Cr Don Henderson said the event marks a meaningful milestone in the Shire’s reconciliation journey. “Our RAP reflects our commitment to walking together with First Nations people on a path of healing, action, and respect,” said Cr Henderson. “We’re proud to launch it during NAIDOC Week — a time of national significance, reflection and shared purpose.”

The afternoon will begin with a Welcome to Country and Smoking Ceremony, delivered by respected Elders Uncle Rick Nelson and Jason Kerr. This will be followed by a celebration of the newly signed Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Djaara Timbers, a partnership that reflects shared goals in cultural and economic development.

A highlight of the event will be a live performance by acclaimed musician Amos Roach, son of legendary artists Archie Roach and Ruby Hunter. Through music that honours Country, culture and spirit, Amos Roach continues a powerful legacy of storytelling and cultural resilience.

Guests can also enjoy billy tea, damper, and the opportunity to connect, reflect and engage with the local community.

The INNOVATE RAP outlines practical actions to support reconciliation within Council and across the wider community over the coming years.
