The next concert in the Christ Church series will be a chance to enjoy the elegance of Telemann’s Paris Quartets and the exquisite sounds of baroque instruments played by polished performers including Alison Catanach (baroque flute), Elizabeth Welsh (baroque violin), Edwina Cordingley (baroque cello), Ruth Wilkinson (viola da gamba) and Ann Morgan (harpsichord).
The Coomoora Ensemble brings together outstanding musicians who are passionate about performance on historical instruments. They have performed together over many years and in various chamber music combinations.
Their upcoming concert at Christ Church on August 26 presents some of their favourite repertoire, Telemann’s wonderful Paris Quartets.
Georg Philipp Telemann was held in high esteem by his eighteenth-century musical contemporaries. Employed as musical director of the principal churches in Hamburg from 1721, Telemann composed prolifically in a wide range of genres, directed concerts and developed his own music-publishing business. In 1738 Telemann published his six Paris quartets while on an extended stay there. They were immediately recognised as outstanding chamber music and successfully taken up throughout Europe.
Alison Catanach completed a Master of Music in flute performance at the University of Melbourne followed by baroque flute studies with Wilbert Hazelzet at the Royal Conservatorium in the Hague, the Netherlands. Based in Melbourne, Alison has performed extensively as a soloist, chamber musician and orchestral player.
Elizabeth Welsh is internationally renowned as a music-maker and performer of early music, new music and experimental improvisation, principally on the baroque violin and modern violin. Lizzy’s “characterful virtuosity” has cemented her as one of Australia’s leading early music performers
Edwina Cordingley held a full scholarship for three years at the Australian National Academy of Music. Edwina then moved to the United Kingdom, firstly studying Baroque cello in Edinburgh with David Watkin before moving to London when she was awarded an apprenticeship with Sir John Eliot Gardiner. Edwina went on to tour Europe with John Eliot in his ensembles, the English Baroque Soloists and the Orchestre Revolutionnaire et Romantique.
Ruth Wilkinson is active as a recorder, viol and violone player and over her varied career has performed extensively throughout Australia, New Zealand, Asia and Europe. She has a diverse discography of some 20 CD recordings. Ruth has contributed to many of Australia’s fine early music ensembles Ruth performed with Consortium, at Christ Church Concerts concert last September.
Ann Morgan initially studied piano, harpsichord and organ at the University of Melbourne. During a European sojourn lasting several years, she continued her harpsichord studies with Gustav Leonhardt, Ton Koopman and Glen Wilson. Ann has given numerous recitals in Australia and Europe, both as a soloist and in ensemble, and has recorded for the ABC and for various CDs.
