Celebrate World Poetry Day with Vanessa Craven who will be reading poems from her recently released book, “Under the Mop Top Tree” at 10:00 am on March 21 at the Creswick Hub.
Vanessa is a local creative – singer, songwriter, photographer, artist and poet – who will be be reading as well as singing some of the poems which have morphed into songs with her duo, Lake Mist.
About the book
“There is a whole life being lived in the pages of this book. Relationships – between family member and friends, and between lovers – are at its core, as too is the natural world of sky and trees and birds and the realms of experience which memory and loss open up for all of us. Grief at the passing of parents, as well as profound attachment to a loved pet, are registered alongside a joyous and often humorous sense of day to day living. A deeply felt concern for the victims of war and injustice is another thread woven through the poetry in Under the Mop Top Tree, the entirety of which is characterised by an open-hearted embrace of what it means to be alive in this complex and multi-horizoned age. World Poetry Day was declared by UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) in 1999 with the aim of supporting linguistic diversity through poetic expression and increasing the opportunity for endangered languages to be heard. Poetry has been practised throughout history in every culture and on every continent.World Poetry Day is the occasion to honour poets, revive oral traditions of poetry recitals, promote the reading, writing and teaching of poetry, foster the convergence between poetry and other arts such as theatre, dance, music and painting, and raise the visibility of poetry in the media. It is celebrated each year on March 21.
