Last Sunday, movie and TV themes were all the rage with the Daylesford Brass Band at the last of five concerts at Christ Church.
Led by Mark Lyall, Sue Morriss and Jenny Jordan, the band played 12 programmed pieces and one surprise encore.
Music ranged from the Ludwig Goransson ‘Mandalorian’ theme from the recent Star War series to a Israel Kamakawiwo’ole reggae version of ‘Over the Rainbow’, made popular by Judy Garland in the 1930’s for ‘The Wizard of Oz’.
Other pieces included the ‘Star Trek’ theme, ‘Gabriel’s Oboe’ from the ‘The Mission’ and the ‘Game of Thrones’ theme.
The concert series ranged across pieces for viola harpsichord to comic opera and, of course, the Brass Band.
Christchurch is a great venue for small concerts. Its stone surfaces, glass and vaulted ceiling give it excellent acoustics.
The concerts have an intimate, community feel. The musicians are close to the audience. You share pews (hopefully with a cushion). And you mingle with your neighbours, friends and performers in the church at interval.
And the surprise encore for last Sunday was the theme from ‘Ghostbusters’, complete with audience participation.
Lot’s of fun and a great performance.
