Member for Macedon, Mary-Anne Thomas, is calling for young people aged 16-22 to take part in the 2021 Macedon Youth Council.
She said, “Now more than ever, our young people are crying out to have their voices heard. We know that young people have been disproportionately affected by the coronavirus pandemic – and I’m proud to be able to give them a platform to raise issues that are important to them.”
The Macedon Youth Council is designed to empower young people to play a more active role in public life. It provides participants with the opportunity to build their understanding of government and the role and responsibilities of a Member of Parliament.
Made up of up to 12 young members selected from across the Macedon electorate, the group will meet five times over the year to discuss local issues, learn about the democratic system and how they can more confidently participate in decision-making processes.
A visit to Parliament House in Melbourne is also included as part of the program of activities.
In 2018, Ms. Thomas made an election commitment to establish the Macedon Youth Council. The inaugural program began in 2019, with 13 young people from across the electorate chosen to participate.
Issues that were raised and explored as part of the 2019 council included single use plastics, youth mental health, renewable energy and the process to Treaty with Aboriginal Victorians.
Members of the Youth Council will be selected following an application process that can be submitted online.
