Driving past the many sheep in the region’s paddocks, who would guess they could solve a murder? Sounds grim but `The Sheep Detectives’ is hailed as an endearing experience which is bound to become a family favourite. It’s on at 11 each morning this week at the Phoenix Cinema, Daylesford.
Hollywood’s golden age wasn’t just great filmmaking. It was a civilisation dreaming out loud — about ambition, beauty, love and loss. Eleven films show this dream at its most vivid.
Among them are `Casablanca’ (Friday, 2pm), `E.T. the Extra Terrestrial’ (Saturday and Sunday, 2pm), `North by North-West’ and `Psycho’ (Hitchcock double -header, Saturday 7pm) `The Godfather (Sunday 7pm) and `Goodfellas’ (Monday, 7pm). Mixing psychological horror with uneasy comedy, `The Drama’ (Monday, 4.30pm) has been a massive box office hit. `Michael’ (Friday and Saturday, 2pm) portrays Michael Jackson and his drive to become the world’s biggest entertainer. A front-row seat at some of his outstanding shows.
`Goodfellas’ (Sunday, 7pm) is seen by some leading critics as outranking `The Godfather’ as the best film about organised crime.
`Some Like It Hot’ (Thursday, 11am) was voted Best Comedy of All Time by the American Film Institute and it is easy to see why. Marilyn Monroe is a vulnerable boozy singer caught up with jazz musicians on the run from The Mob in this legendary drag comedy that fizzles from start to the famous last line.
Described as a sinfully enjoyable sequel, `The Devil Wears Prada 2’ (8pm) proves that a redressed classic can be restyled with the right accessories.
