This week’s photo captures a large family of Australian Wood Ducks enjoying the sunshine at Hepburn Golf Course. Although often called ducks, these elegant birds are actually more closely related to geese. The group appears to be a mixed brood, with one pair of adults fostering ducklings from another family, a common behaviour among wood ducks.
Sadly, ducklings are vulnerable to feral cats and foxes, so Hepburn Shire’s cat curfew, which requires cats to be kept indoors between dusk and dawn, is vital for their protection. During the spring breeding season, keeping pets contained at all times helps give native wildlife like these ducklings a better chance to thrive.
