Across two vibrant weekends, Words in Winter presents a rich programme boasting 45 events and over 80 artists with an even split of local talent and visitiors, emerging and established – offering literary events, performances, conversations, art installations and free events, storytelling, workshops and children’s programs that invite audiences to immerse themselves in the power of words. The festival offers a diverse and accessible literary experience, with half the program free or by donation and the entire Conversation Hub series only $10/$15 a session.

This year’s expanded program promises something for everyone
● Local Acts: Celebrate the region’s thriving arts scene with performances by homegrown poets, authors, and storytellers, alongside showcases from local writing groups and artworks. Familiar names include Toby Sime, Trevor Shard, and Petrus Spronk, alongside newer voices such as Izzy Roberts- Orr, Shele Parker Black and Lu Sexton.
● Conversation Hub: Across Saturday 23 and Sunday 24 August, immerse yourself in a day of literary energy at our vibrant Conversation Hub. From debates about poet laureates, the lure of Romantasy to powerful LGBTQIA+ stories, Hotel Bellinzona buzzes with conversations for every interest. Guest writers include Jasper Peach, Katherine Brabon, Alice Robinson, Rijn Collins, Nadia Mahjouri, and Ayesha Inoon—with many more to discover. ● Workshops: Dive into the creative process with writing workshops and hands-on sessions for all ages and skill levels. Workshops include writing trauma safely with Sumitra Singam, exploring poetry with Bonny Cassidy or Jade McCutcheon and ‘metaphor and symbolism’ with the Curious Writers Book Club.
● Live Performances: Experience spoken word, music, and theatrical performances that reimagine storytelling in bold new ways. Check out play readings from local theatre collective Crone Theatre or ‘big beautiful female theory’ with local Rebecca Lister and Devon Taylor. Join Mo Sudi for “My Temporary Name was Refugee“- a poetry performance or for something special book in a one on one consult with The Poetry Apothecary to cure what ails you- with local herbalist Caroline Parker (The Medicinal Garden) and local poet Izzy Roberts-Orr (Raw Salt).
● Open Mics: Got a story, poem or song that you are wanting to share? Come along to The Bottom Drawer to express your inner poet or Yandoit Open Mic invites all storytellers and songsmiths to share the stage
● Children’s programming- The festival is a fantastic destination for families, offering a range of engaging activities specifically designed for younger enthusiasts, with a range of free and ticketed events. Comic and writing workshops, storytime at the library, all ages music event with Family Farm and the much anticipated school writing awards with guest author Emma Gourlay!
Words in Winter Gala- Saturday 23 August, 6:30pm- 11pm
Words in Winter Gala is the festival’s most anticipated night of literary revelry. Hosted by local theatre maker Lyall Brooks (Lab Kelpie), the evening begins with a gourmet dinner accompanied by live jazz from Late Night Radio. Then the spotlight turns to On the Couch, where host Rebecca Lister leads lively discussions with special guests:
● award-winning novelist Tony Birch (Women & Children)
● author/journalist Jenny Valentish (The Introvert’s Guide to Leaving the House)
● musician, writer and disability advocate Eliza Hull (Running Underwater)
The night really kicks into gear with Lit Karaoke – where literature meets songs. Channel your inner Kate Bush with ‘Wuthering Heights’, or choose from other literary-inspired song classics! This signature event is a highlight of our expanded two-weekend festival.
