The Daylesford & District Historical Society is celebrating its 60th anniversary having commenced in 1964. On SUNDAY 2 MARCH 2025 10.00am – 2.00pm the Museum will hold a celebratory OPEN DAY. Daylesford community members and visitors are invited to join us.
The first President of the Society was Colin Lelean, a local chemist. The old School of Mines and Technical School building which houses the Daylesford Museum was first occupied by the Society in 1971.
Our links with the local community go right back to those early days when many historical items were donated to start a district collection including Indigenous artefacts from Mt Franklin.
The current day custodians of the collection and family histories are indebted to the band of volunteers who have nurtured the enterprise over those early years and continuously up to today.
The development of the Museum being recognised as an inclusive and welcoming space led to it achieving accreditation in 2020 by the Australian Museum and Galleries Association. The strength of our community links identified in the process has been built on by four recent pop-up art shows of local artists some of whom studied in the technical school.
Over the last few years the building has been refurbished with a new roof, drainage works and internal external painting. The Museum building is now heritage listed.
We continue to have regular exhibitions. We have a huge number of items, documents and records including over 1100 assessed, catalogued and photographed fabric and clothing items in our collection. They are all yearning to be displayed.
Our OPEN DAY is the opportunity for local families, friends and visitors to visit our community museum for a behind-the-scenes look at how the Museum operates. You will be able to meet the wonderful volunteers who will be on hand to show our collection and to explain the extent of our archival storage facilities with databases on property, rate books and school records.
