Gewürzhaus has opened a new store in the Rex on Vincent Street. This is their second in regional Victoria.

German-born sisters Eva, Maria and their mother Gabi opened the first Gewürzhaus store (meaning Spice House in German) in Melbourne’s Lygon St in June 2010. In the 13 years since, the expert herb and spice merchants now offer more than 250 single-origin spices, herbs, salts, peppers, teas and sugars from around the world. They mix and mill over 100 unique small-batch blends which are made on a weekly basis using whole ingredients to ensure freshness and the highest quality.

The new store forms part of the redevelopment of heritage building, The Rex Theatre, owned by local renowned artists David and Yuge Bromley and entrepreneurs Eddy and Malinka Comelli.

David and Yuge Bromley said they are excited to welcome Gewürzhaus to the Rex, the first business to open as part of the redevelopment. “We feel great excitement, if only for our own love of their quality offering, to welcome Gerwürzhaus not only to Daylesford but to the Rex. What a pleasure it has been to work with Eva, Maria and Grant in bringing their Daylesford store to fruition. We feel they will be that little bit of garnish and spice we all need in a town that in many ways we find embodies community and nourishment.”

Director Eva Konecsny said the The Rex Theatre with its 75-year history and traditional art deco features, was the perfect fit for Gewürzhaus. “We are delighted to be part of this beautiful heritage building and have reinstated the original shopfront features including the leadlight and tiling. Cooking from the home and heart has always been an integral part of preserving traditions for four generations in our family. We can’t wait to share our passion and products with Daylesford customers and inspire them to create new recipes and traditions.”

In keeping with the area, the Gewürzhaus experience is built on traditional, personalised customer service and values. The stores offer a unique self-scoop system, aimed at a more sustainable shopping experience by encouraging customers to sample blends first, then buy as they need and refill their jars.
