Speedway driver Stephen ‘Dougo’ Douglas died from injuries suffered in a crash at the local speedway in Daylesford last weekend.
According to a Victoria Police media release, “officers believe a car hit a wall and rolled and was then hit by another vehicle during an organised event at a raceway off Basin Road.”
Mr Douglas died after being airlifted to hospital.
Police have appealed for witnesses to come forward and a report is being prepared for the coroner.
The speedway community has been deeply affected by Mr Douglas’ death. In a statement, Daylesford Speedway said, “It is with great sadness that we have to pass on the news of the passing of Standard Saloon competitor Stephen ‘Dougo’ Douglas. Dougo was always a happy bloke and was well respected by his competitors always available to lend a hand or an ear.
“The Speedway community will sadly miss Dougo and we would like to pass on our condolences to Sandra and the rest of Dougo’s family and friends. If anyone is struggling with the effects of yesterday’s accident we encourage you to contact organisations like Beyond Blue or Headsapce.”
Shire CEO Bradley Thomas, said: “Hepburn Shire Council acknowledges the tragic accident that led to the death of Stephen Douglas on the weekend. Council has been in contact with the Daylesford Speedway Club Committee to offer condolences. Our hearts and thoughts go out to Stephen’s family and friends and those who were at the event.”
“This is obviously a very serious incident and Council is gathering information on the circumstances. We are aware that the Victoria Police and coroner are also investigating the matter and preparing reports. We are not able to provide any further comment on the tragedy at this time.”
