Max Primer and Abby Ashmore raise the rainbow flag in Vincent street at an IDAHOBIT Day celebration.
On May 17, 1990, the World Health Organization removed homosexuality from the Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems.
International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Interphobia & Transphobia (IDAHOBIT) celebrates LGBTQIA+ people globally, and raises awareness for the work still needed to combat discrimination. It is a day to celebrate affirming and culturally appropriate care for all LGBTIQA+ communities.
In Daylesford, IDAHOBIT day was celebrated with a rainbow flag raising on the community flag pole in Vincent Street. Cr Jen Bray was on hand to speak on behalf of Council. Local identity and LGBTIQA+ spokesperson, Max Primer, raised the flag on behalf of the community assisted by local singer-songwriter, Abby Ashmore.
“IDAHOBIT day is so important and the raising of the flag is an inclusive sign that we are all loved and relevant in a world that is so cruel to so many,” said Max Primmer. “It’s also a sign to LGBTQIA+ people that they are welcomed by our community and can feel safe and be who they are.”
Thank you to members of the LGBTIQA+ Advisory Committee, ChillOut Committee, Councillors, staff and members of the community who came out to support the flag raising.
