A gripping adaptation of George Orwell’s 1984 is set to captivate audiences at the Castlemaine Fringe Festival on April 4. 198(4), written by acclaimed playwright Dr. Christine Davey, reimagines Orwell’s classic tale in a stark and visually stunning production that explores the enduring human search for love, truth, and hope in a world dominated by oppression.

At the heart of 198(4) is Win Smith, a worker in the totalitarian state of Oceania. In a society where gender has been erased, history rewritten, and power held by ruthless oligarchs, Win risks everything to defy the system and find connection in a disconnected world. The adaptation blends dark humour with moments of profound beauty, offering a fresh take on Orwell’s chilling vision of the future.

This powerful production comes from Geelong-based theatre company Skin of Our Teeth Productions (SooT), known for bringing thought-provoking works to life. Now in its tenth year, SooT is a female- and disability-led company dedicated to creating accessible, dynamic theatre. Under Davey’s direction, the company has delivered acclaimed productions such as Frankenstein, Jane Eyre, and My Brilliant Career.

198(4) is enhanced by an original, electro-punk noir score composed by Kristel Rae, a Geelong musician whose atmospheric soundscapes evoke the unsettling world of Oceania. Her music acts as an integral part of the production, heightening its tension and immersing audiences in the play’s dystopian landscape.

The adaptation has already drawn praise, premiering in February 2025 and selling out performances in Yea. Now, after stops in Bendigo and Port Fairy, it arrives in Castlemaine for two performances at Phee Broadway Theatre.

This bold and immersive theatrical journey is recommended for audiences aged 16 and over, with its themes of stylized violence and control reflecting Orwell’s enduring warnings about power and freedom.
