From the soccer World Cup final to a highly praised version of one of literature’s immortal stories and a study on leading a more satisfying and generous life.
They are just some of the offerings this week from Daylesford’s community owned and operated cinema, the Phoenix.
In`Common Wealth’ (tonight, 6.35) filmmaker Kane Gugliemi journeys across eight countries to develop an intimate, globally-minded documentary questioning the economic and political systems shaping modern life.
Gugliemi came to notice as one of Australia’s youngest TV network directors, working on popular productions such as `Home and Away’ He grew up in a conservative, capitalist-minded family and now says that, living in the country on a small farm, he kept wondering, “Why aren’t we happy?”
He sets out to examine alternative models of living that emphasise compassion, community and shared prosperity as hopeful alternatives to traditional, capitalist systems.
As one of his interviewees says, “People are so busy playing Monopoly Board games that they don’t realise that they are being played.”
Says another, “We can all be winners if we do the right thing.”
After the film there will half-hour Q & A which includes director Gugliemi, Rayna Fahey (Prosper Australia), Karl Fitzgerald (Grounded) and Kane Jackson (Maslow).
Meanwhile, those swept up in World Cup fever can see the final on the big screen at 5am on Monday.
After cup holders Argentina’s brilliant disposal of England, all eyes are now on Spain to see if they can halt a team that includes the mesmeric Messi.
