SUMMARY:Introduction to Personal Support in Emergencies
DESCRIPTION:Learn practical ways to support others in emergencies, build confidence and connect with your community, lunch included!\n\n\nThis Community Support – Introduction to Personal Support workshop offers a practical, down-to-earth introduction to how we can support people during and after emergencies. Drawing on the training developed by VCC Emergencies Ministry (VCCEM), the session explores how individuals and communities are impacted by stressful and traumatic events, and what it looks like to respond with care, confidence and compassion. Participants will gain a clearer understanding of recovery, the role of personal support, and how everyday people can play a meaningful role in helping others through difficult times.\nThrough simple, practical approaches, you’ll learn how to recognise stress reactions, provide psychological first aid, and support others in ways that are safe, appropriate and genuinely helpful. The workshop focuses on real-world skills like listening, offering reassurance, and connecting people with the support they need, while also understanding the importance of role clarity and boundaries. It’s designed to build confidence, not create experts, giving you tools you can use in your workplace, your community, or even just looking out for neighbours and friends.\nImportantly, the session also turns the lens back on you. Supporting others can be rewarding, but it can also take a toll, so there’s a strong focus on self-care, awareness, and looking after your own wellbeing. Whether you’re a community member, volunteer, or part of a local organisation, this workshop is a chance to build practical skills, strengthen connections, and feel more prepared to support others when it matters most.\nLunch will be provided at the session.\n\n\n\n
