Hepburn Springs Golf Club hosted a round of the Victorian Senior Amateur Championships recently for the fifth year in a row. Conducted by Golf Australia this is a significant event on the State’s golfing calendar.
Normally run in June, it was moved to November because of COVID-19 in order to attract participants from all over the State. Eighty-one golfers competed, including 66 from outside our area, coming from as far away as Ballarat, Warragul and Colac.
“This is a great tribute to our club,” said President Patrick Baird. “Golf Australia obviously recognises the quality of our course, our facilities and hospitality. At this time of the year the course is in excellent condition thanks to the dedication of our ground keepers. The greens are well manicured and the fairways, which have been planted with couch grass, rival most country courses.”
Stroke and handicap competitions were held for men and women competitors and the fleet of Hepburn Springs Golf Club carts were available for those who preferred a more leisurely experience.
“Our clubhouse was in full swing with the golfers enjoying food and refreshments provided by our member volunteers from our bar and kitchen under the creative leadership of Phillipa Wooller”, said Patrick Baird.
There were two personnel from Golf Australia in attendance who formally organised and ran the championships. They stayed in Daylesford and we extend our sincere thanks to Travis and Lou Melotte from Hotel Frangos, who provided the accommodation for our visiting Golf Australia officials.
“Our township is fortunate to have this club. We provide challenging golf, health and recreation for our 120 or so members and the many visitors who come here to play and stay in town. The course is also used by the schools as part of their golfing curriculum.” said Mr Baird.
Regular weekly competitions are held, as well as major competitions, social and fundraising events throughout the year. For those who simply want an enjoyable time without playing in a competition, there are plenty of times for social golf. Social memberships are available, or one can simply play on a green fee basis.
The club caters for other social activities including weddings, parties, anything. There are ample ways to use the course and facilities. For those interested in booking facilities or playing, contact the secretary on 0413 329499.
